A practice manual for renewing Uruguayan trade mark registrations. The deadline structure is simple, but the way the fee is set differs markedly from other jurisdictions. Fees are denominated not in a fixed peso amount but in an inflation-indexed unit revalued monthly, and the amount for the same renewal differs according to whether the mark is a word mark or a figurative or composite one. The grace-period rate is three times the standard.

2. Anchor date and due-date calculation
The anchor is the registration date. Renewal falls due on its tenth anniversary, with the window opening six months earlier, and the grace period counted from the day after expiry.
Worked example
For a registration dated 2023-05-23.
| Item | Formula | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Window opens | Expiry − 6 months | 2032-11-23 |
| Renewal due | Registration + 10 years | 2033-05-23 |
| Grace begins | The day after expiry | 2033-05-24 |
| Grace ends | Six months later, fee tripled | 2033-11-23 |
| Next due date | Every 10 years thereafter | 2043-05-23 |
3. The renewal window
- The window opens six months before expiry.
- Renewal completes on request and payment, with no separate declaration of use.
- Foreign proprietors proceed through a local agent.
- Every Uruguayan case is a direct filing; with the country outside the Madrid system, designations do not exist.
4. Grace period and fees
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Grace begins | The day after the expiry date |
| Grace period | 6 months |
| Fee | Not a percentage surcharge but a dedicated rate — three times the word-mark standard |
| If missed | The right lapses; no restoration procedure was identified |
5. Fees — both the unit and the type of mark move the amount
Uruguayan official fees are set in an indexed unit whose value is reset on the first day of each month. The number of units is fixed as below, but the amount actually payable depends on the month of payment.
| Basis | First class (units) | Each additional class (units) |
|---|---|---|
| Word mark, standard | 1,121.03558 | 672.62135 |
| Figurative or composite mark, standard | 1,569.44982 | 896.828466 |
| Within the grace period | 3,363.10675 | 1,121.03558 |
6. Small and medium enterprise reduction
Uruguay offers small and medium enterprises an eighty per cent reduction, the deepest of any jurisdiction covered in these manuals. Eligibility and the application route should be confirmed with the office; it turns on the client's own size, which we cannot assume.
7. Non-use cancellation
Uruguay has no periodic declaration of use. A mark left unused for five consecutive years is, however, open to a cancellation action by an interested party. That is a standing exposure rather than a deadline, so keep evidence of use separately from renewal reminders.
8. Management checklist
- The registration date, from which expiry is derived.
- The type of mark — word against figurative or composite — which changes the fee.
- The class count, given the split between the first and additional classes.
- Convert the quotation using the unit value for the month of payment; an older quotation will not match.
- Small and medium enterprise eligibility, worth eighty per cent.
- Every Uruguayan case is a direct filing; no international registration substitutes for it.
- No restoration was identified — treat the end of the grace period as final.
Sources, cut-off date and disclaimer
This manual is based on iphere's August 2026 survey of country-by-country overseas maintenance rules, together with values produced by the deadline engine that runs on those same rules. Official fees and deadline rules change by office notice, so please confirm against the official source and your local agent before any actual payment or filing.
