A practice manual for renewing Brazilian trade mark registrations. The first thing that throws quotations and schedules off in Brazil is the number of registrations. The office long operated a one-class-per-application system, so a client protecting three classes holds three registration numbers and files three separate renewals. Treating the portfolio as a single multi-class registration gets both the amount and the timetable wrong.

2. Anchor date and due-date calculation
The anchor is the date the right was granted, that is the registration date rather than the filing date. Examination in Brazil can be slow, so the two dates may be far apart — take care not to calculate from filing.

3. The renewal window
- The window opens twelve months before expiry, leaving generous preparation time.
- The office does not send renewal reminders. Reminding is entirely our responsibility.
- Renewal completes on payment and requires no proof of use.
- Where Brazil is designated through an international registration, renewal goes to WIPO on the international date.
4. Grace period and surcharge

5. Lapse and restoration
After the six-month grace period the registration is gone and no procedure revives it; only refiling remains. Since the office issues no reminders, even the fact of the miss has to be noticed on our side first.
6. Official fees
Official fees for direct filings are set in reais and are revised from time to time, so check the current schedule when quoting. Designations through an international registration use the Swiss franc individual fee.

7. Management checklist
- The grant date; do not calculate from filing, since the gap can be large.
- How many Brazilian registrations the client holds, given that each class may be its own registration.
- Whether the case is a direct filing or a Madrid designation, since designations renew at WIPO.
- Begin client confirmation when the window opens twelve months before expiry.
- The office sends no reminders; ours is the only line of defence.
- No restoration and a doubled fee in grace — do not plan around it.
