A practice manual for renewing Saudi trade mark registrations. The exposure here is not the fee or the procedure but the calendar. The term runs ten Hijri years, and a Hijri year is about eleven days shorter than a Gregorian one. Over ten years that is close to four months. A deadline set ten Gregorian years from filing fires when it is already too late.

2. Anchor date and due-date calculation
The anchor is the filing date, and the term runs ten Hijri years from it. The exact expiry date is obtained by converting the filing date to the Hijri calendar, adding ten years, and converting back. As a rough guide it lands about nine years and eight months later on the Gregorian calendar — but do not manage to the estimate; obtain the expiry date recorded by the office.
Worked example
For a registration filed 2020-06-15, approximately as follows. The dates below are estimates, not authoritative.
| Item | Formula | Date |
|---|---|---|
| The wrong calculation | Filing + 10 Gregorian years | 2030-06-15 — about four months late |
| Approximate expiry | Filing + about 9 years 8 months | Around February 2030 |
| Renewal window | One year before expiry | Around February 2029 |
| Grace ends | Expiry + 6 months | Around August 2030 |
| Exact dates | Hijri conversion or the office record | To be confirmed |
3. The renewal window
- The window opens for the final year of the term.
- Foreign proprietors must act through a local agent.
- Where Saudi Arabia is designated through an international registration, renewal goes to WIPO on the international date and the Hijri issue does not arise.
- For direct filings, obtain the expiry date from the office record and carry it onto the docket.
4. Grace period and penalty
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Grace period | 6 months after expiry |
| Surcharge | A penalty applies — amount to be confirmed locally |
| If missed | Automatic cancellation — no restoration |
5. Lapse and restoration
After the six-month grace period the registration is cancelled automatically and no procedure revives it. There is, however, a three-year period during which third parties cannot register the same mark. That leaves room to refile; it does not keep the right alive.
6. Official fees
No published schedule for the renewal fee or the grace penalty was located. Confirm current amounts with the local agent before quoting. Since the expiry calculation is a far larger exposure than the fee, ask for the expiry date to be verified at the same time.
7. Management checklist
- The expiry date as recorded by the office; do not calculate filing plus ten years.
- Whether the case is a direct filing or a Madrid designation — designations run on the international date and avoid the Hijri issue.
- Begin client confirmation when the window opens a year before expiry.
- There is no restoration, so do not plan around the grace period.
- Fees require local confirmation at the time of quoting.
- The three-year bar after cancellation is room to refile, not continued protection.
Sources, cut-off date and disclaimer
This manual is based on iphere's August 2026 survey of country-by-country overseas maintenance rules, together with values produced by the deadline engine that runs on those same rules. Official fees and deadline rules change by office notice, so please confirm against the official source and your local agent before any actual payment or filing.
