A practice manual for renewing Canadian trade mark registrations. Canada charges no late surcharge, so entering the grace period does not raise the amount. Two other things do differ. Fees paid before the window opens are refused, and the schedule rises every 1 January. Older registrations also carry a term change from fifteen years to ten, so an inherited expiry date should not be taken at face value.

2. Anchor date and due-date calculation
The anchor is the registration date, not the filing date, and renewal falls due on its tenth anniversary.

For a registration dated 2023-03-10.

3. Pre-2019 fifteen-year registrations
Canadian marks registered before 2019-06-17 had a fifteen-year term. Those registrations move to a ten-year cycle from their first renewal after the change, so a single case runs a fifteen-year segment followed by ten-year ones. Where an inherited portfolio contains older Canadian registrations, confirm which rule produced the expiry date on file.
- Pre-change registrations run fifteen years to the first renewal, then ten years thereafter.
- Some older registrations carry no Nice classification. Those need the classes settled before renewal.
- The renewal fee cannot be calculated accurately until the classes are settled, so finish the classification work before the window opens.
4. Grace period — no surcharge, but a hard end

5. Lapse and restoration
Once the grace period ends the registration is removed and there is no procedure to revive it; only refiling remains. The absence of a surcharge reads as "being late costs nothing", but what costs nothing is the fee — the deadline itself is as firm as anywhere.
6. Official fees
Online fees as at 2026. Canadian fees are indexed and rise every 1 January, and the rate that applies is the one in force on the date of payment. A quotation given in December and paid in January will not match.

7. Management checklist
- The registration date, from which expiry is derived.
- Whether the registration predates 2019-06-17, in which case the first term is fifteen years and the expiry date needs verifying.
- Whether Nice classification has been assigned; older registrations need the classes settled before renewal.
- A separate reminder for the window opening date, since earlier payments are refused.
- The fee rate for the year in which payment will be made, given the 1 January increase.
- No surcharge, but no restoration either — do not treat the grace period as slack.
